It's been a long time since I took a 3.00 + underdog. Time to try some luck once more.

I like and dislike Fognini at the same time. I dislike him because he can throw away matches without any fight. I saw him losing a set 0-6 with winning two balls in the entire set without any sign of fighting. I don't think that he is a 100% professional and that he always tries to win. This is his main disadvantage. But - on the other hand - he's got a very nice game - he is a modern claycourter. With reliable serve, very good forehand and backhand not being a liability. He can occasionaly go to the net and finish the ball from there as well. He moves really good and definitely is a threat for some higher ranked players on clay. He proved that by ousting f.e. Cilic and Berdych in Monte Carlo this year. He is coming to this match full of confidence, having won challenger in Rimini lately and it is always a sign of a good form, even though it was a lowly ranked challenger. He also came back against tricky Santoro in 1st round, so I can guess that he treats this tournament seriously.

Mathieu is of course higher ranked player, with more success in the past (well, he is much older of course). But in my opinion his game is simple. He is the player without any major weapon, but on the other hand there are not too many weak sides of his tennis. He is an all-courter, who can play well on many surfaces - including clay. But he's not a claycourter. Mathieu's season has been a big disappointment so far. Only 17-17 overall and only one semifinal in the first week of the year.
